Food Supplies Review
A typical day for the children at the orphanage consists of three meals (breakfast, lunch and supper). School classes begin early and so the breakfast meal is served at 6 am and the students leave immediately after to make the half hour walk to Kisii town to school. They come back to the orphanage at lunchtime and then make the walk back to finish school which ends at 5 pm. Supper is served at 8 or 9pm. Typically, breakfast is bread or snacks and tea, lunch and dinner consist of rice+ beans+ green vegetables, or meat+green vegetables+ugali (which is made from maize flour). Sunday is special with fish and greens included in the meal.
We are often asked about just how much money it takes to feed the children at the orphanage. Of course, food prices can change based on many factors (just as they do here in the US). But currently it costs about $4/day for one child. Multiply that by 68 children, and we arrive at approximately $272 per day for food. This translates to about $8,160 per month.
The orphanage does not receive any financial aid or assistance from the Kenyan government or from any other organizations besides their connection to us here in the US. Locals from the area will sometimes provide small amounts of vegetables when the food supply has run empty; however, it is not uncommon for people in the surrounding areas to go several days without food themselves.
