School Changes
We have 49 children from the orphanage currently that attend school as well as 12 additional children that belong to the workers. The workers are able to have the school fees for their children paid for as a benefit because the workers themselves serve on an unpaid voluntary basis.
Many of the children in the area are unable to attend school due to the high cost.
The children walk to and from school each day, about a 30 minute walk each way, including a trip back to the orphanage for lunch. The schools attended are Rianyakwara Primary School, Kimai DEB Primary School, and Matagaro S. D.A. Secondary School.
There are 3 terms per year (each 3 months long): Jan-March attend (April holiday), May-July attend, (August holiday), September-November attend (December holiday)
Previously per term:
38 children in primary schools (38 x6000)= Ksh 228,000 which translates to $2280 (multiply by 3 terms so $6,840 per year)
30 high school students (30 x 13000)= Ksh 390,000 which translates to $3900 (multiply by 3 terms so $11,700 per year)
At the start of this year, there have been some changes to the schools and increases in curriculum costs, materials, and teaching fees. Now that has increased about a combined $1,200 US for all children for a three-month term.
